NABLUS, ISRAEL, FEB.1,2003: Palestinian children defy a curfew and attend an overcrowded school in the West Bank city of Nablus. Most children here have suffered dramatically because of the ongoing conflict and occupation by Israel forces. Overcrowded classrooms, frequent absenteeism because of the curfews and checkpoints and psychological problems have created a quickly worsening situation which has been reflected in their grades. A British non-governmental agency recently reported that Palestinians are currently living in a state of extreme, worsening poverty and fear for their future. Almost three-quarters of Palestinians now live on less than US$2 a day Ñ below the United Nations poverty line.
