Because of the droughts and flooding in the last year, most Malawians were unable to buy seeds to grow their own food and are suffering from malnutrition because of the ongoing food shortage in the region. The World Food Program estimates that 3.2 million people in Malawi alone will be affected before March 2003. US Lawmakers expressed support for helping southern Africa avert a famine that threatens nearly 13 million people. But they also accused regional leaders of aggravating the food crisis originally caused by floods and drought.
